Drumroll please…

We’re very excited to announce this auction prize – a bass guitar autographed by Sting.

Sting

The guitar is a faithful reproduction of Sting’s trusty 1953 Precision Bass. It has a contoured lightweight ash body with single-ply pick-guard, a maple neck and fretboard with a 7.25″ radius, a vintage 2-saddle bridge and a vintage single-coil pickup. Prize also includes a Fender gig bag and display case.

Enjoy this reproduction of the P Bass from the early days and pay homage to a great player at the same time.  This limited edition guitar has been kindly donated by Richard Seewald and JR Smith.

We need your help

This year we’ll be taking you on a sea odyssey “2014 Leagues Under the Sea”

Tickets to the 2014 Charity Gala have now sold out and with just over six weeks to go we need to call on all our friends and sponsors to donate goods, services and experiences for us to auction.

The Charity Gala is all about helping to drive positive change and with the help of our community we really can make a difference. Last year we raised over two million Czech Krowns at our gala and this year we’d like to raise even more.

A big thank you to those of you who have already donated prizes.  We’ll be announcing them on the blog in the run up to the big night.  If you haven’t yet donated and are able to offer a prize please get in touch.  We’d love to hear from you.

Visiting our charities

We have spent time with all of our charities over the last few weeks. It has been both a humbling and rewarding experience.

It was a real privilege to attend Diakonie’s twentieth anniversary celebrations. We had the opportunity to tour the building and meet with the staff, the children and their families.

We met with Dr Stary in the children’s oncology garden (one of the projects that we supported last year) at Motol.  We will again be raising money for infusion pumps and other projects at this year’s gala.

At Dedina, a day centre for people with impaired sight, we witnessed blind people making pottery, basket weaving, listening to audio books and taking English lessons. Our contributions directly support these programmes.

We also visited Beroun’s children’s home last Friday. It was great to see some of our old friends there and to hear how the children have enjoyed the horse riding, swimming and salt cave visits that we sponsored. We will be selling therapeutic activity vouchers at the 2014 Charity Gala. We will also be raising money to replace the therapeutic water bath which has recently broken.

It has been truly uplifting to see the progress that our charities have made in the last year but it is clear that they need our continued support. If you would like to visit any of the charities please let us know.

Donate your birthday

This year instead of birthday gifts why not ask your friends and family to support one of our charities and make a donation in your name.

Audrey Muir did exactly this recently. Audrey and her husband David have been supporters of the Charity Gala for many years and to celebrate Audrey’s 50th birthday they asked people to donate money to charity rather than purchase gifts.

Audrey’s act of kindness raised a grand total of 15,000Kc. Audrey is pictured below handing over the cheque to our very own Paula.  Thank you Audrey!

Audrey chose to donate the money she raised to Dedina, a home dedicated to helping blind adults in Prague 6. Audrey’s birthday money will be used to support Dedina’s craft rehabilitation programme.

Dedina is holding an open day on Thursday 9th October.  If you have time and would like to support this wonderful local charity please pop in to Smolikova 866, Prague 6. There will be all kinds of craft products on sale from 9am to 3pm.

Why not donate your next birthday and help change lives just like Audrey. For more information on donating your birthday email us at praguecharitycommittee@gmail.com or speak with any committee member.

A positive impact

We would like to thank our generous host Frank, the team at the James Joyce and all the lovely people who attended this year’s Apres Ski party for giving us their time, energy and money.

Together we raised more than 80,000 CZK to support the work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart and other local causes.  Over 60,000 CZK has been directed to low income families with social needs (including women and children that have been victims of domestic violence), families with handicapped children and homeless people.  A further 20,000 CZK will be used to provide social support to victims of road accidents and to help maintain the Motol Hospital Oncology Garden.

Thank you for taking the time to support us, we really couldn’t do it without you.

Animal-assisted therapy

Members of the committee visited Beroun Children’s Home recently to catch up with the extra curricula activities sponsored by participants of the Charity Gala.  While we were there we had the privilege of meeting Duffy the Dog.

Duffy is trained to work with complex needs children and during our visit we were lucky enough to get the chance to join the children in a grooming session.  Laughter filled the room and a therapeutic time was had by both children and adults alike!

Doctor Zdenek Kabelka

It is with sadness that we share the news that Doctor Zdenek Kabelka has died suddenly at the age of 63.

Doctor Kabelka was the figurehead for the Broken Silence Charity Gala from 1999.  He inspired our fund raising efforts to support his department’s work helping hearing-handicapped children across the Czech Republic.

Doctor Kabelka leaves an enormous professional void having dedicated his life to helping others. He worked as a physician at Motol Children’s Ear, Nose and Throat Department from 1978 and as the head of the department from 1998 performing life saving and life changing operations including the cochlear implant. His devotion and passion for his work were highly admired and valued by all who knew him. He once said “ I hope not to have to help your children but if the need arises then I am here for you.” and we all knew with certainty that he would do whatever he could for each and every one of us. Indeed as the years passed by several children from our community needed his professional medical care. It was a great comfort to know that someone so devoted and skilled was just around the corner.

We send our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues at this most difficult time.

Après Ski Party

Join us for a night of Après Ski fun at the James Joyce on Saturday 29th March.

Apres Ski 2014

Food will be available (at extra cost) from a special Après Ski bar menu.  For every meal purchased the James Joyce will make an additional donation to charity.

To buy tickets please contact any committee member or email us at praguecharitycommittee@gmail.com.

We hope to see you there in your finest ski attire!
